THE OLIVES TEAM
Owners and longtime locals Angela Perzow Pelz, Martha Heintzman and Michael Hawes opened Olives Community Market in January 2013 in Function Junction, Whistler. Angela, Martha and Mike are all long time locals and are ecstatic to have finally opened their very own organic grocery store - making their dream business a reality.
Angela Perzow, Co-Owner
Angela is originally from Montreal and moved to Whistler in 2005 after spending 15 years in Paris and New York. Raised on organic food, she is a fourth generation food retailer who is passionate about living naturally and eating healthy. Angela’s father was one of the original owners of Caper’s (now Whole Foods) in Vancouver where she spent a lot of time with him during the 80s and 90s.
While working at another grocery store, she realized she needed to fulfill her dream of opening her own natural food store in Whistler. Angela is happily married and has a son. She strives to live her true self every day and strongly believes that you are what you eat.
Martha Heintzman, Co-Owner
Martha is originally from Toronto. She moved to Whistler in 1969. Martha is a 'Whistler pioneer", having been one of the founders of Nesters. Martha is keen to provide everyone in Whistler with the highest quality food and excellence in service she can provide. You'll find her in the store, out skiing in the winter, or beating you up the hill on a trail ride in the summers.
Mike Quigley, Store Manager
Mike is originally from Waterloo, Ontario. He has been in Whistler since 2007. Having spent 3 years at Olives, Mike knows the ins and outs of the store. He is passionate about bringing the "Community" and "Market" together at Olives Community Market. Always keeping at eye out for local products to bring to the store, he likes it to feel as though you are at the local farmers market - open every day of the week and year round. As a Red Sealed Chef, the integrity and quality of prepared food items served in-store are of the utmost importance. He spent time in the kitchens of some of the best hotels in town. Look for restaurant quality food, but in a grocery store setting.
Mike loves being instrumental in providing the Whistler community with the foundations of excellent health. In his spare time, you'll find him on the mountain - both summer and winter, and in his kitchen at home testing new recipes for you to enjoy in the near future.
Rie Hamada - Grocery Manager
Rie has been living the dream in Whistler since 1995. Leaving her family in Japan wasn't an easy choice, but in the 20 years since moving here, she has started her own family and is now a mother of four boys. But she never let that shake her Zen - Rie is one of the calmest and most grounded people you will ever be fortunate enough to meet. An active member of the Buddhist community, Rie is a fountain of peace and wisdom. Her presence at Olives is greatly appreciated by staff and customers alike. Olives wouldn't be the same without Rie. When she isn't working, she spends her time creating the felted Christmas decorations you can purchase at Olives. A strong and talented woman indeed.
